Fun Stuff: The BeOS Pixel Pushing Challenge

Project Specs

Project Overview
Challenge sponsored by Be, Inc. consisting of three design tasks.

Project Duration
3 days

Tools   Used
Adobe Photoshop
BBEdit

BeIA Toolbar
Task 1: Design a toolbar for the forthcoming BeIA web browser. Include navigation buttons for Forward, Back, Reload and Home, and provide a means of accessing Preferences and Bookmarks.

Though the user interface for the new BeIA operation system is completely customizable, I designed these toolbars to fit with the existing BeOS look and feel. I tried to incorporate interface elements, widgets, etc. from the OS wherever possible, while keeping the combined height of the toolbar & location field as small as possible.

Yahoo Redesign Yahoo Redesign
Task 2: Conceptually redesign Yahoo's front page, addressing information design and aesthetic issues. Present an annotated sketch or a paragraph hilighting small changes that would make a big difference.

When I started to look at Yahoo's home page, it became clear that there were more issues at work than I cared to address. As such, I concentrated on solving a few of the more glaring problems. The resulting mockup establishes a general page layout and cleans up a few aesthetic issues, but stops short of a wholesale redesign.

MPEG Icon
Task 3: Design a 32 x 32 pixel icon for a generic MPEG video file.

I based this icon on the generic document icon from the BeOS UI, using a film strip as the central metaphor. To identify the file format, I added an "MPEG" tag similar to those used by Adobe Photoshop and other graphics software. The tag has the added benefit of allowing you to reuse the central icon for other video file formats.
