I was going for a few key improvements in the above redesign:
- Better emphasize Yahoo's category hierarchy by moving it above the fold.
- Consolidate similar/related functionality: search links are grouped together, individual auctions appear with the main Auctions icon; etc.
- Better emphasize the Search field by placing it in a prominent position away from unrelated links.
- Tone down the default link color: using a darker blue makes individual links (and the page as a whole) more legible; using a lighter blue for subnavigation links helps differentiate top-level and second-tier categories.
- Add some character to the fonts: substitute a more attractive font (Verdana, Tahoma, etc.) for the generic Helvetica.
- Introduce more colors to break up monotony of blue links; granted, the mockup above starts to look a little like a box of Fruity Pebbles, but I wanted to stick to the color palette estabilshed in Yahoo's top navigation icons.
- Clean up site branding: Remove links/ads to left and right of the logo, which otherwise compete with the Yahoo! brand.
- Provide support for ad units: Center corridor supports an industry standard 468x60 banner ad.
